Wernigerode, in Saxony-Anhault is a charming little town of 33,000 located at the foothills of the Harz mountains. Located in the former East Germany, Wernigerode is the southern terminus of the Harzer Schmalspurbahnen, the largest small gauge railway network in Europe. They're also notable for having never completely converted from Steam powered locomotives, so a large number of their trains are pulled by 2-10-2 locomotives. Wernigerode itself is a lovely town to visit, with over 1000 half-timbered houses, and a nice altstadt with plenty of shops to browse. Brush up on your German, though, because very little english is spoken here!
